PTDS para-toluenediamine sulfate -a PPD Hair Dye Substitute?

Using PTDS para-toluenediamine sulfate as a PPD para-phenylenediamine substitute
-is still a unsafe risk:

TraintrackIt’s similar to when I was about 10 or 11 years old. I would get together with my siblings and a couple of our cousins to go on an ‘adventure’. Translation: hike. We trekked through wooded hills while in the country visiting our grandparents in New Hampshire. Unbeknownst to our parents, when we ‘hiked’ in the city, it actually was a real adventure. We dared each other to hike along train tracks and jump off when we saw a train approaching. We always jumped several hundred yards away from the train. We were playing ‘chicken’, but we weren’t too crazy...

Until we attempted the ultimate dare: hike along a train trestle located over a small lake! We could escape by jumping on side platforms scattered in only a few spots on the bridge or –quite literally- jump in the lake. That was one extremely dangerous thing we did…but only once. We made it to the platforms in the nick of time, but we also wizened up to realize the odds were not in our favor. So THAT was that... And we lived to hike another day –in safer surroundings!

We learn a similar lesson when trying to substitute ppd para-phenylenediamine with para-toluenediamine, -as we learn from the following study.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Ptds_ppd chart. www.sababotanical.com
PTDS para-toluenediamine sulfate Study

According to this Northwestern University Medical Center study*:
“Finding alternative hair dyes for individuals allergic to PPD para-phenylenediamine has been difficult. Newer permanent and demipermanent hair dyes that have replaced PPD with para-toluenediamine or para-toluenediamine sulfate  (PTDS) are now available.

Ppd is not safe. www.sababotanical.comPTDS para-toluenediamine Study – OBJECTIVE:

“We examined whether individuals allergic to PPD para-phenylenediamine will tolerate PPD-free hair dyes containing PTDS para-toluenediamine sulfate.”

PTDS para-toluenediamine Study -RESULTS:

Of 28 PPD-allergic patients seen since October 2006, 16 (57.1%) tested negative to all other substances on the dye series. Eleven tested positive to PTDS; of these, several were also allergic to other substances in the hair dye series. There was only one patient who was allergic to ortho-nitro-PPD and not to PTDS. Of 7 additional PPD-allergic patients seen from 2004 through 2006, 4 (57.1%) tested negative to PTDS. In total, 20 of 35 individuals (57.1%) tested positive to PPD but negative to PTDS. Ten of 13 PPD-positive patients for whom PTDS hair dyes were recommended subsequently used a PTDS hair dye, and all tolerated these products.

PTDS para-toluenediamine Study -CONCLUSION:

Fifty-seven percent of patients allergic to PPD para-phenylenediamine in this study will likely tolerate newer permanent and demipermanent hair dyes based on PTDS. Most individuals not allergic to PTDS will also test negative to other substances in the dye series. All 10 patients who tested positive to PPD and negative to PTDS who subsequently used a PTDS dye free of PPD tolerated these products. Many individuals allergic to PPD will benefit from the newer PTDS-based products.
Do you agree with the researchers conclusion?

Did you notice that they added the words: likely, most, many?  This means that even substituting  para-phenylenediamine (PPD), with PTDS para-toluenediamine sulfate, you are still on a risky path. Are you ready to take a dangerous risk to your health…hoping that maybe you’ll be okay with this chemical dye which is actually a derivative of PPD? It’s still ‘a hike on the train trestle’ –playing ‘chicken’- with very little chance of escape. Once you have a serious reaction, it’s too late to reverse your course. Isn’t it more logical to ‘hike on a safer route when’ it comes to your precious hair, skin and overall health? The safer route doesn’t come from chemicals. The safer route is found in nature.

Allergic Reaction to Chemical Hair Dye Solution: Henna Hair Dye.

If Henna Hair Dye is the Answer...Then 'What Was the Question?'

The question is: Where do I find a totally natural hair dye? A henna hair dye that comes in a variety of hair colors?

I wish the following comments were not true,
but sadly they are real experiences of people literally caught in a hair dye dilemma: They’ve had serious allergic reaction to hair dye containing (PPD)*, (PTD)*,  ammonia, peroxide and other synthetic chemicals and now they are at a real loss as to what to do. They are searching for a natural alternative to chemical hair dye so they can avoid allergic reaction. However, many times just don’t know where to begin to find a totally natural hair dye.

PaulaP-Severe Hair Dye Allergy.A PPD Allergy experience

“I was covering the grey in my dark brown hair for years without a problem, then suddenly last year my scalp blew up with swollen patches, itchy rash all over my forehead, and my head felt like it was on fire. I kept dying my hair because I didn't make the connection--how could I react to something I'd been using for years? It took three doctors before someone figured it out...”*

Severe PTD Allergy

“I too had a severe allergic reaction to hair dye that does not contain PPD but a derivative of it - PTD. I was only doing highlights the past few years and finally decided it was time for bit more coverage due to graying. The stylist used products by K…G… due to the fact they do not contain PPD…

After the first all over hair color I did experience some mild scalp itching, gone by the next …. 8 to 12 weeks later I went back for a color touch up and this was where the nightmare began...By the time I got home my scalp was itching, escalated as the night wore on. I did realize at this point what had happened weeks ago was a precursor to what was happening to me now. I took some Benadryl - spent the night in sheer agony. I never experienced such horrible itching in all my life, my head was so inflamed and swollen my hair on the top of my head was standing up!

In the morning I knew something was extremely wrong! My face & neck were swollen beyond recognition, I was a total rash with blistering most importantly my throat was swelling and I was having trouble breathing. My husband rushed me to the E.R…

This was seven months ago and I am still dealing with the after effects, massive hair loss and re-growth, itching, etc. Has anyone out there suffered to this degree and when does it end?” –Debra.*

Twyla-Ring-saba-botanical-106x150A True Experience from Twyla in Iowa

I'm a 54 yrs. old, "natural" brunette and LOVE Lustrous Henna and their wonderful customer service with Syed.

A few months ago I was diagnosed with Lymphoma at Mayo Clinic with follow up 3 mos. visits to a Hematologist, blood specialist there. I then began to think about changing some of my lifestyle habits and a NATURAL Hair Color was an easy one to change. I am not on chemo since my Dr. says my own immune system is trying to fight this cancer. Chemo kills the good & the bad, therefore I'm thankful I do still have my hair at this time.

My friend introduced me to Lustrous Henna when I complemented her hair. I didn't even know she used any type of color on it, because it looked so natural. She ordered my first time with her order,to try it out. So I have twice now, due to shorter hair.So glad I heard about this henna from her! I am thankful for the Lustrous Henna's shorter process time compared to others that require an extremely longer process and it leaves my hair in much, much better condition than when I did salon color.

My single priority, due to my health issue,is that it's safe, plus it looks and feels so natural and healthy. I can't say enough good about it. It was my pleasure to visit with Syed a few days ago about Lustrous Henna. His patience and very informative manner is so helpful and refreshing. He is an asset to Lustrous Henna products. He helped me a great deal with tips on how to tone the gray as it grows in from my root line.
I sincerely thank you, Syed and Lustrous Henna for the difference you have made in my life. I'll be ordering again soon.

Warmest Regards,
Twyla R., Greene IA

Lustrous Henna Soft Black:

Excellent ordering service. Very prompt and efficient. Highly recommend. The product is of high quality and we have been using it for years....very satisfied.”        - M. Mirpuri, Hong Kong, China.

Lustrous Henna Brown

“Colors are rich and true. Hair is soft silky shiny and beautiful.”  -Customer from Vista, CA, USA

“I mixed this with a few tablespoons of henna and a couple tablespoons of lemon juice and got a beautiful dark chestnut color. All of my greys were covered. I have natural kinky African American hair. The coverage was great and my hair did not feel dry and brittle after this great natural colourant.” –D. Daniel, Joshua, TX,  USA

“I had a salon apply the henna to my hair and it turned out great. Most of the heavy grey was covered and it gave my hair much needed body. Thank you. I recommend not doing this process at home if you are at all tentative - I feel going under the dryer at the salon made a big difference in setting the color in my hair.” –Lake in the Hills, IL, USA

Lustrous Henna Mahogany

“I would like to thank Saba Botanical for making such a wonderful product. I have been using Lustrous Henna hair color for last 2 months and m already impressed with the results. I have almost 35% grey hair and have been using hair colors for the last 3 years. I was so upset about using those harmful chemicals (peroxide and ammonia) but had no other choice. 2 months ago while searching on the internet, I came across Lustrous Henna by Saba Botanical. I read all the reviews which were very impressive. I thought of giving a try and I’m so glad that I tried it. The results were amazing. It covered, if not all, but definitely 90% of my grey hair. I was so happy and the color lasted for more than 1 month. Finally I found a natural and great remedy for my grey hair. Saba Botanical, thanks again for the wonderful product.” –M. Bazaz, Corpus Christi, TX, USA

“Received the item FAST (to Australia) = awesome customer service. Finally had the chance to try the products out last weekend. I'm approaching 50 years old and was looking to cover the grey hair on my crown. Previously used Sur--a B---s-l with good coverage results, but some damage to hair. Lustrous Henna has improved the condition of my hair which is most defintely a bonus, but didn't cover the grey as well as I'd hoped ... unfortunately. Will try a second dose/application as recommended.”

Gray Hair –What Really Causes It?

Warning: You may have to apologize to a few people after reading this.

natural gray hair treatment. www.sababotanical.comWhy Gray Hair –The Easy Answer

When melanin (pigment) is reduced, our hair color turns gray. If we no longer have any melanin (pigment), our hair turns white.

Why Gray Hair –The Detailed Answer

Melanin gives our hair its natural color. Melanin is spread into the middle layer of the hair shaft or cortex. The type of amount of melanin distributed give hair its natural color.
Even though there are a vast variety of hair color shades, they are derived by only two types of pigment. Our hair color is made up of dark (eumelanin) and light (phaeomelanin).

Gray Hair from Babyhood to Adulthood

While in the womb, hair is white until the production of melanin quickly begins. Special pigment cells called melanocytes make up melanin. These cells are at the skin’s surface at the follicles from which hair grows. As hair develops, melanin (pigment) containing keratin is injected into the hair cells through the melanocytes. This process is what produces hair color in various hues. Keratin is protein that is essential for healthy hair, skin and nails.1
As we get older, our chance of going gray increases, as melanin decreases. We hit age thirty, then forty, then fifty, then…well, you know what happens.

natural gray hair treatment for men. www.SabaBotanical.comGray Hair –Other Causes

Age and genetics are not the only causes of gray hair. Scientists have determined that there are other factors that can cause gray hair and even accelerate its production. These factors can actually change the pigment of hair; causing it to be lighter or darker.

Intrinsic factors: genetic defects, hormones, body distribution, age.

Extrinsic factors: climate, pollutants, toxins, chemical exposure.
In 2009, scientists in Europe described how hair follicles produce small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. This chemical builds on the hair shafts, which can lead to a gradual loss of hair color.2

Surprise! Surprise! It’s not really the kids that cause our gray hair! It’s not totally the boss or a crazy spouse either. For most of us, it’s simply the natural cycle of life, our heredity and our environment. So, now is a good time to apologize -to all those folks you thought were the real source of your gray hair.

Telogen Effluvium -One Temporary Cause of Hair Loss

Telogen_effluvium-is temporaryTelogen Effluvium Defined*

Telogen: The resting phase of the hair cycle that usually lasts approximately three months.

Telogen Effluvium: The second most common form of hair loss. Androgenetic alopecia is the most common. A condition that causes an increased number of hairs to enter the telogen or resting phase. The additional shedding usually occurs in response to various stresses such as emotional trauma, post-pregnancy and illness, major surgery, and certain medications. Telogen effluvium can be delayed (occurring a few months after the stressful incident) or chronic (unresolved).

Telogen Loss: Loss of hair during resting phase of hair or "natural" loss.1
Some hair loss conditions go by the name "effluvium," which means an outflow. Effluviums characteristically affect different phases of the hair growth cycle.2
According to the American Hair Loss Association, Telogen effluvium (TE) “is a poorly defined medical condition and unfortunately very little research has been done to understand TE. TE happens when there is a change in the number of hair follicles growing hair. If the number of hair follicles producing hair drops significantly for any reason during the resting, or telogen phase, there will be a significant increase in dormant, telogen stage hair follicles. The result is shedding, or TE hair loss.

Telogen Effluvium appears as a diffuse thinning of hair on the scalp, which may not be even all over. It can be a bit more severe in some areas of the scalp than others. Most often, the hair on top of the scalp thins more than it does at the sides and back of the scalp. There is usually no hair line recession, except in a few rare chronic cases.”

Hair Growth Explained

“Hair follicles on the scalp do not continuously produce hair. They cycle through a growth stage that can last two or more years, then regress to a resting stage for up to two months before starting to grow a new hair fiber again. At any time on a healthy human scalp, about 80% to 90% of the hair follicles are growing hair. These active follicles are in what is called the anagen phase. That leaves up to 10% to 20% percent of scalp hair follicles in a resting state called telogen, when they don't produce any hair fiber.”2

Visit_Your_DermatologistTE is Temporary: Maintain Your Healthy Hair Care Naturally

Whatever form of hair loss TE takes, it is fully reversible. The hair follicles are not permanently or irreversibly affected; there are just more hair follicles in a resting state than there should normally be.2

Do you usually have healthy hair? Have you experienced recent hair loss in spite of efforts to take care of your normally healthy hair? If you've experienced stressful conditions described above, it might be Telogen Effluvium affecting your healthy hair. Please visit your medical doctor or dermatologist, to be sure. In the meantime, continue to care for and maintain your otherwise healthy hair with proven natural hair care products.

Olive Oil and Multani Clay -What are They Good For?

olive oil great for hair. www.sababotanical.comOlive Oil and Multani Clay -a great combination for hair.

Multani Clay*  (Fullers Earth) is great for drawing dead cells and excess oils from the skin. It also stimulates circulation to the skin. It absorbs bacteria, toxins and reduces water loss.  The skin is then rejuvenated and becomes smooth, soft and supple. An aged method for controlling excess oil in the scalp. Wash hair and impurities are removed but the hair still retains its natural moisturizers; thus hair is left soft and radiant.

Hair Color by Lustrous Henna -How to Apply.

Hair Color by Lustrous Henna -General Process of Application- Reminders
Time Process Note
Once you take out desired amount of Lustrous Henna® powder in a bowl, heat some water almost boiling (we do not have exact amount of water measurement as water absorption may differ from one batch of herbs to other), (approximately heat one cup of water for 100 grams of powder) Start adding water to the powder while mixing the power to make a workable creamy paste. As soon as the paste is cool to touch, It can be applied to the hair. The paste should not be left out for longer than 10 minutes. This will have a negative effect on color.

In case, Lustrous Henna® paste is left without applying for 20 minutes or more, It should be discarded, as it has lost its coloring properties.
Wet or Shampoo your hair for best results with mild shampoo like: Imbue™ Nurturing Shampoo.
10 Once the paste is ready to use, you may add extra water if desired. Apply this paste to your hair with hands with gloves on or comb and brush. Spread it evenly all over the hair. Then cover your hair with shower cap(supplied) and leave it for 60 minutes. You may add some extra water for convenience in application. You must cover your hair with shower cap to avoid premature oxidation.
10 + 60 = 70 Warm up dye paste on your hair with hair dryer or blow dryer for 1-3 minutes while cap is still on. Wait for 15 minutes,( keep the cap on). This is a very important part of process. The cap must be on during the process.
70 + 20 = 90 Again warm up your hair with dryer for 1-3 minutes while cap is still on. Wait for 10 to 20 minutes and rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water. This is equally important for fixing of dye on your hair.
The paste also can be left on hair for a total of 2 hours to achieve a deeper shade of hair color. You may shampoo your hair using a Saba Botanical recommended shampoo. Hair color will initially appear lighter than actual shade. The hair color will slightly darken to actual shade, after 24-48 hours of oxidation.
