"Hibiscus rosa-sinensis has a number of medical uses in Chinese herbology. Lokapure s.g.et.al their research indicates some potential in cosmetic skin care; for example, an extract from the flowers of Hibiscus rosa- sinensis has been shown to function as an anti-solar agent by absorbing ultraviolet radiation.


In the Indian traditional system of medicine, Ayurveda, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, especially the white and red, is considered to have medicinal properties. As a hair loss treatment, the flowers are boiled in oil along with other spices to make medicated hair oil. The leaves and flowers are ground into a fine paste with a little water, and the resulting lathery paste is used as a shampoo plus conditioner."*

Hair Dye Chemical- Toulenediamine. How Safe?

Hair Dye Chemical Question: Toulenediamine, What is It?

 “Toluene-2,5-Diamine and Toluene-2,5-Diamine Sulfate are used as ingredients in the formulation of permanent hair dyes, colors and tints. Toluene-3,4-Diamine may also be used in hair dye products.” (1) This permanent hair color chemical has also been called para-toluenediamine (PTD) or p-toluenediamine.

How Safe is P-Toluenediamine in Permanent Hair Color Dye?

It depends on whose hair color research (or lack of it) you choose to rely on. Natural hair color safety should be paramount in your choice of hair coloring dye.

The “Experts” Say:

After extensive scientific research, the European Commission (Health and Consumer Safety) concluded that the use of toluene-2,5-diamine cannot be considered safe for hair coloring or hair shaft . The National Allergy Research Centre in Denmark concluded that hair color dye users need more protection and a ‘preventative strategy’ to reduce cases of severe allergic contact dermatitis.

Scientific Committee on Consumer Products Conclusion on Toluene-2,5-diamine in Hair Coloring: UNSAFE

“The SCCP is of the opinion that the use of toluene-2,5-diamine cannot be considered safe based on the available data. This conclusion may be re-evaluated if human toxicokinetic data were to become available in which dosages used more closely approximate the intended use of the substance.
· Toluene-2,5-diamine is an extremely potent skin sensitizer.

· Clarification must be given on the myocyte degeneration in the dose range finding study of the 90 day study.
· Toluene-2,5-diamine sulfate itself has no mutagenic potential in vivo.

However, studies on genotoxicity/mutagenicity in finished hair dye formulations should be undertaken following the relevant SCCNFP/SCCP opinions and in accordance with its Notes of Guidance.” (2)

National Allergy Research Centre Abstract on Toluene-2,5-diamine in Hair Coloring : UNSAFE

“Colouring of hair can cause severe allergic contact dermatitis. The most frequently reported hair dye allergens are p-phenylenediamine (PPD) and toluene-2,5-diamine, which are included in, respectively, the patch test standard series and the hairdressers series. The aim of the present study was to identify dye precursors and couplers in hair dyeing products causing clinical hair dye dermatitis and to compare the data with the contents of these compounds in a randomly selected set of similar products… Hair dye allergy may cause severe clinical reactions, and the current regulation is insufficient in protection of the users. A preventive strategy is needed.” (3)

USA Expert Panel Opinion on Toluene-2,5-diamine in Hair Coloring : SAFE

On the opposite side of the dilemma is the conclusion on use of these permanent hair color ingredients by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel. They state that Toluene-2,5-Diamine and Toluene-2,5-Diamine Sulfate are safe for use as ingredients in permanent hair dyes :

“The safety of Toluene-2,5-Diamine, Toluene-2,5-Diamine Sulfate and Toluene-3,4-Diamine in hair dyes has been assessed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel. The CIR Expert Panel evaluated the scientific data and concluded that Toluene-2,5-Diamine and Toluene-2,5-Diamine Sulfate were safe for use as hair dye ingredients . The CIR Expert Panel concluded that the data were insufficient to assess the safety of Toluene-3,4-Diamine as an ingredient in hair dyes . (1)

A Serious Word of Caution

Before deciding to continue using chemical hair color dyes, let’s learn more about the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel and who they work for - from their own website:

“Cosmeticsinfo.org is an information Web site that includes factual, scientific information on ingredients most commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products in the United States. The Personal Care Products Council (the Council) and its member companies sponsor this Web site to provide consumers with easily accessible comprehensive safety information on cosmetics and personal care products and to help consumers make informed purchases.” (1)

This Council actually represents the manufacturers who actively promote the use of chemicals like para-toluenediamine (PTD) or p-toluenediamine in their hair color products.

Therefore, even though the Council provides extremely valuable information on other topics, how can this expert conclusion on this particular issue be deemed as totally accurate? Reported ‘facts’ can be confusing and at times, overwhelming. However, as consumers, it is wise to take extra precautions to be safe and protect our hair color.

DMDM hydantoin bronopol (2-Bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol): Cosmetics preservatives that decompose and release formaldehyde , which the International Agency on Research on Cancer lists as a known human carcinogen. The preservatives and their decomposition products, including formaldehyde, can trigger allergic reactions.
Fragrance: This catch-all term can include hundreds of chemicals and trigger allergic reactions.
Ingredients can have harmful contaminants : Many common ingredients can contain impurities linked to cancer and other health concerns.

Avoid these common ingredients where possible:

• DMDM hydantoin,
• Diazolidinyl urea,
• Imidazolidinyl urea,
• Ceteareth,
• Polyethylene glycol and PEG

Federal law doesn’t require companies to list on product labels any of the chemicals in their fragrance mixture.
PEG/Ceteareth/Polyethylene compounds : These synthetic chemicals are frequently contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which the U.S. government considers a probable human carcinogen and which readily penetrates the skin.
Resorcinol : Common ingredient in hair color and bleaching products; skin irritant, toxic to the immune system and frequent cause of hair dye allergy. In animal studies, resorcinol can disrupt normal thyroid function. The federal government regulates exposures to resorcinol in the workplace, but its use is not restricted in personal care products.”

Glow Mask

1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon warm milk
1 teaspoon honey
2 tbsp. Lustrous Henna® Face & Body Mask Skin Treatment

Mix together egg yolk and other ingredients. Apply to face and throat, hands or feet. Leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

Softening Emollient Mask

2 tbsp. Lustrous Henna® Face & Body Mask Skin Treatment
1 egg yolk
1/3 cup avocado, peeled and mashed
1/3 cup milk
Pour Lustrous Henna® Face & Body Mask Skin Treatment in small container. Beat the egg yolk until fluffy, then add and mix. Add milk and avocado, mixing thoroughly with the yolk-powder mixture. Apply to face and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water to remove.  Re-rinse to close pores with cool water. Gently pat dry.

Moisturizing Paraffin Bath for Hands.

4 ounces paraffin
1/4 cup wheat germ oil, extra-virgin olive oil or almond oil
1 tbsp. Lustrous Henna® Face & Body Mask Skin Treatment
 
In a small saucepan, heat the first 2 ingredients together until liquid. Mix in Lustrous Henna® Face & Body Mask Skin Treatment until well-blended. Cool to comfortably warm and "paint" each hand or dip both hands at once into the mixture. Wrap in plastic wrap. Leave on 10 minutes; then peel off.

 Full Body Mask
 

2 tablespoons Lustrous Henna® Orange Peel Powder Skin Treatment
5 tablespoons Lustrous Henna® Face & Body Mask Skin Treatment
2 tablespoons honey
¼- ½  cup hot water (enough to make paste)
Mix all ingredients to form a paste. Slather on (especially on back and chest areas) and leave for 15-20 minutes. Gently rinse off.

Strawberry Mask for Oily Skin

1/2 cup very ripe strawberries
3 tablespoons Multani Mitti Clay
Enough water to make paste, (if needed)
Mix strawberries and Multani Mitti Clay together to make a paste and apply it to your face, Leave on for 30 minutes, then rinse off with cool water.

Multani Clay Face Mask

Mix Multani Clay Powder with water -enough to make a soft paste. Apply to face (avoid eyes). After 10 minutes, gently rinse off. You can also mix it with rose water; or mix with equal parts of orange juice and honey; or yogurt.

Peppermint Mask for Oily Skin

Mix approximately one tablespoon of Multani Clay Powder, a few drops of peppermint extract and water. Let water mixture soak for 30 minutes. Beat in one egg white into the mixture and mix well. Apply and leave on face for 15 minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water.

Acne Treatment Mask

(deep cleans skin and unclogs pores)
¼ c.  Multani Mitti Clay
¼ c. Orange Peel Powder
2 tablespoons oatmeal powder (oatmeal ground in blender)
water

 Mix all powders together. Take just a couple tablespoons of this mixture and add enough water to make a paste. Apply to face and neck. Work gently in circular motion when applying paste, especially to nose and chin area. Leave on for 15 minutes, and then gently wash off with cool water. Save dry mixture in air-tight container or zip-lock bag and store until needed.

Natural Hair Growth Recipes -Shikakai Powder Shampoo

Natural Hair -Shikakai Shampoo for Hair Growth

Shikakai is referred to as "fruit for the hair." It has a naturally mild pH, and it gently cleans the hair without stripping it of natural oils. Use Shikakai powder as a natural hair shampoo for sensitive to normal scalps or to control dandruff. Shikakai is said to aid hair growth and strengthen natural hair roots.

Hair Growth Shampoo (Quick Method)

1 tablespoon EACH of:
Pure Shikakai Powder 
Pure Amla Powder 
Pure Reetha Powder Organic Wash 
1 ½ cup water.
Mix dry ingredients with water in a saucepan. Bring to ALMOST boiling and lower heat to simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Discard solids. Let mixture cool to room temperature.
When ready to use, apply to natural hair and leave on for approximately 5-10 minutes or longer (if desired). Wash out thoroughly. You can follow up with a natural conditioner (although not necessary).

Shikakai Traditional Hair Growth Shampoo (Slow Method)

6 cups water
1 tablespoon Pure Amla powder
2 sticks of cinnamon
12 cloves
2 teaspoons of loose black tea leaves
Combine in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Simmer for 20 minutes; then add the following:
2 cups of Pure Shikakai powder
½ cup pure Pure Reetha Powder Organic Wash

Raise heat to ALMOST boiling –but DON’T boil. Turn off heat and remove saucepan from hot burner. Let mixture in saucepan sit for at least 4 hours or overnight.

When ready, do the following:
Heat mixture to ALMOST boiling –but DON’T boil. Turn down heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Discard solids. Let mixture cool until warm to touch.

Stir in the following ingredients to the mixture:
1 tablespoon of honey
2 teaspoons of almond oil
2 teaspoons of olive oil
1 teaspoon of Vitamin E oil

Let mixture cool to room temperature and transfer into tightly sealed jars or bottles with lids. Store in the refrigerator. Mixture should keep up to one month.
When ready to use, apply to natural hair and leave on for approximately 15-20 minutes or longer (if desired). Wash out thoroughly. No need to follow up with a conditioner (unless you really want to).
