'Black Henna' -an Unsafe, Mislabeled Chemical Dye.

The Hair Dye 'BLACK HENNA'. What Does It Mean?*

'black henna' is dangerous. NOT natural.About the misnomer: 'Black Henna':
  • 'Black Henna' is not pure, nor is it pure henna. Pure henna is a green plant (Lawsonia inermis)and the green leaves are dried, crushed and powdered. When used alone it will turn the hair an orange-red color. If it is properly used with pure indigo, the hair will dye to black.  If it is mixed with a very toxic chemical called, para-phenylenediamine (PPD), “coal tar”.
  • 'Black Henna' is not pure indigo or 'black indigo'. Pure indigo is a green plant(Indigofera tinctoria) and the green leaves are dried, crushed and powdered. When used properly with pure henna, it will turn hair to a black color. However, if it is mixed with chemicals dyes, or even henna that has been compromised by chemicals, including PPD, then it is not pure indigo or the so-called, 'black henna'.
  • PPD is known to cause severe skin allergies such as: Permanent scarring, marked redness and swelling of scalp, face and eyes, eyelids may completely shut, allergic contact dermatitis may spread throughout body.
  • Severe PPD allergy can also result in contact urticaria and anaphylaxis on rare occasions. See: NZ Dermatological Society report and photos.
  • PPD*: “This compound is used in almost every hair dye on the market, regardless of brand. The darker the colour, usually, the higher the concentrations. Some of the so-called "natural" and "herbal" hair colours, while ammonia-free, contain PPD. Some products sold as henna also contain PPD added, particularly so-called 'black henna'. In many cases, PPD causes allergic reaction, and can cause scarring in some people. PPD should never be applied directly to the skin in its pure form or mixed with anything else.”
Get to know the facts and keep safely away from harmful chemical and synthetic hair color dyes.

Henna Hair Dye -the Perfect Choice for Pregnant Moms

Happy pregnant mom. www.sababotanical.comHenna hair dye is all natural and safe during fetal development,
especially during pregnancy in the first trimester, is the perfect choice for Moms-to-Be. Henna hair dye is the natural choice, but traditional henna hair dye application method can be too lengthy and cumbersome for many pregnant women.

Chemical Hair Dye is Not the Best Hair Dye for Pregnant Women

It is strongly recommended by most obstetricians, gynecologists and other health care professionals, that pregnant women NOT use permanent hair dye during the first trimester of pregnancy.*

Your baby is undergoing very important neurological fetal development during your first three months of pregnancy. Low levels of permanent chemical dye are absorbed into the scalp and passed through the body and have been identified in urine samples.

Additionally, breathing toxic fumes from permanent chemical dyes can be harmful to fetal development. Of course, all pregnant women want to protect the baby from any kind of potential danger.

Some healthcare professionals feel the "risk is minimal", "might be probable", "maybe unsafe". To this I say, why take ANY possible risk with your baby's health; as well as your own. At least during the first trimester, try something that has been safe to use since ancient times. You might just make it a permanent decision because -you love the results.

Pregnancy. Use safe henna hair dye. www.sababotanical.comNot All Henna Hair Dyes are Equal -Avoid Mislabeled "Black Henna"

“Black Henna” dyes usually contain even higher concentrations of PPD than many commercial hair dyes sold in the USA. Sadly many individuals think that when they purchase this product, it is pure indigo (or pure indigo only mixed with pure henna). Far from all natural hair color, the results have led to sad consequences and also some dermatologic horror stories. It's sad to relate that there are no regulations in many countries, including India, for ingredient labels. For this reason and to avoid further confusion, always make sure of the company’s reputation that you are dealing with.

A Word about Pure Indigo:

It is not the so-call misnomer, “Black Henna”.

"Black Henna" is not pure indigo or "black" indigo. If indigo is mixed with chemicals dyes, or even henna that has been compromised by chemicals, including PPD, then it is not pure indigo or the so-called, "black henna".
When you want pure indigo, make sure what you buy is: pure indigo.

If you want all natural hair color, stay far away from “Black Henna”.

A Very Happy Mom Testimonial
“I was so excited to try out this henna dye! But so nervous at the same time! I have never dyed my hair before and I decided to go with the Lustrous Henna® Mahogany to give my hair a little red touch!

Thanks to my husband's help, it was really easy to do and took about a couple hours to complete the whole process. I loved that I could do it in the comfort and privacy of my own home and watch TV at the same time! It made the time go by really fast!

It was also great to know I got a beautiful color but without all the harmful ingredients! The color came out pretty red at first but it eventually blended in and looked gorgeous! I love my new hair color and I can't wait to buy a different color next time!

I recommend Saba Botanical Lustrous Henna Hair Color for all men and women who either want to cover grays or just want a new hair color/change like me! The colors are gorgeous, don't dry your hair out, and are safe for everyone to use!”

Henna for Hair -Is it Really Pure and Natural?

Black_henna_PPD
Henna for Hair -Is It REALLY Pure Henna?

Several dermatogists in India, a major source of the world’s henna, are compaigning against mislabeled henna hair dye, some containing harsh chemicals. Dr. AK Bajaj, a leading dermatogist in Allahbad, is of the opinion that many patients have little knowledge about the products they’re using. He stated that, “The cheapest and most commonly used ones are the misleadly labeled, ‘black henna’ dyes that contain extremely high concentarations of P-Phenylenediamine (PPD).”

Black-henna-hair-dye-ppd

‘Mehndi’ is the Hindi word for Henna. Sadly, consumers have been fooled by the manufacturers of ‘Kali Mehndi’ or ‘Kali Black Mehndi’ (spelling variation: mehdi, mehandi, mehendi),  thinking it is free of harmful chemicals. However, ‘Kali Mehndi’ has at times up to 16% PPD, a level extremely harmful to one’s health. “’Kali Mehndi’ is different from green mehdi. There is no mehndi that is black in color. If it is black, it is always a chemical dye.  People are unaware that this particular product is actually a chemical dye and not a natural hair dye. They believe that it is 'henna hair dye' or simply another form of ‘mehndi’’, stated Dr. Vinod Kumar Sood (Dermatology and Venerealogy Department, Retired Dept. Head, Dayanand Medical College).

As mentioned in previous natural hair dye posts, there are several other products and kits masquerading as “pure henna” that can be found on store shelves or online, readily available to purchase. However, as the examples above show, they are not all natural hair dye or pure henna. So-called, 'henna hair dye' contain truly harmful chemicals!

Henna hair pasteBuying Henna for Hair

It's extremely important to know the reputation of the company marketing natural hair dye, including pure henna and other henna hair dye mixes. Why take a chance with your health? Make sure the next time you buy a natural hair dye like henna for hair, you really know the answer to the question,

“Is It REALLY Pure Henna?”

Testimonial from a happy pure henna and Lustrous Henna® for hair customer

Your henna (hair dye) is the best I have ever used in 10 years of searching for a natural hair coloring product. Your henna is very clean of debris, leaves and sand, because it is so finely sifted. It colors my resistant gray hairs very well. I love how smooth like pudding your henna becomes once it is mixed with water. (Other henna products that I have used in the past became like dried mud when I applied it to my hair and they are very messy!)

I also love how fast I can use your henna after I mix it with water, and I don't have to leave it on my hair for 4 hours for it to color my gray. After only 60 minutes my gray is colored!

Also my curly, kinky hair is becoming SOFTER AND SMOOTHER!!! I can straighten my hair to a silky like texture that I never achieved before, without a chemical relaxer. Now I don't have to use harmful chemical relaxers, or harmful hair dyes!

Your company also ships the henna when you say you will, in a timely manner, and I receive my products very promptly. I always had to call in the past and complain to other henna companies about where my order was.
Keep up the excellent products, and the excellent work and THANKS A MILLION!!!

Hair Color and Natural Dyes: Quicker Henna Application Method?

-Small_Lawsonia_inermis_Henna Plant. www.sababotanical.comNatural Dyes: Henna Hair Dye Application Made Simple

The dye from the henna plant is a powerful natural wonder to enhance hair color. Unfortunately, traditional henna application can be long and tedious, especially for our busy lifestyles.

However, a quicker application of henna hair dye is now available. It's the power of nature made simple with Lustrous Henna®. Just mix, apply, wait about an hour, rinse out and style in record time with great results.

Finally. Never having to repeat the following statement when thinking of hair color:

I would love to use natural dyes like henna hair dye, but…I just don’t have the time!

Finally: Never having to perform the following traditional henna hair dye ritual:

Mixing the paste, then: waiting….waiting…waiting…. for hours… hours… hours.
Applying the paste, then: waiting….waiting…waiting…. for hours…and hours… and hmm…hours.
Applying a plant-based tint, then: waiting….waiting…waiting! ARGH!!!

Traditional Henna Dye Release takes many hours.
ENOUGH of waiting for hours and hours and hours...
Finally: No more searching for natural dyes to highlight or change your hair color, only to find out that they're not all natural. Even some henna-based kits include ingredients containing harmful chemicals like Para-phenylenediamine (PPD)!

Damage-free henna hair dye is available and it’s simple:

LustrousHennaPKG_FRTLustrous Henna®.

Use Lustrous Henna's natural dyes and fall in love with your hair color and naturally beautiful hair!
A testimonial from a very happy woman:
I just wanted to tell you how much I LOVE the Lustrous Henna.  I've been using it for about 2 years now, and I will never go back to the chemical dyes, for many reasons. Getting my long hair dyed in a salon cost me well over $100. When I tried to be more economical and do it myself, I would still have to buy two bottles of dye, not to mention processing agents, and special conditioners, and then color safe shampoos and conditioners for after.  I have used color safe products and non-color safe products with the Lustrous Henna, and there is no difference, it doesn't really fade. And ... (I only need 1 pack for my hair), the price can't be beat.

Also, even when I went to a salon, my hair would fade to an ugly, mustardy brown after only 2 weeks to a month.  With Lustrous Henna, I dye my hair about once every 3 months, and even when it fades, it fades to a very nice, dark shade (I use the black and the mahogany).
In fact, the only reason I know it's faded at all is because my grays start showing.  Which brings me to another point.  My grays are interspersed throughout my hair, and the henna dyes them a lighter shade than the rest of my hair, which just ends up looking like really pretty highlights.

And the fact that it does absolutely NO damage to my hair is the icing on the cake.
I love this stuff, please never stop selling it!  I will never go back to chemical dyes ever again.

Hair Color - Golden Highlights with Cassia Obovata.

Love your golden highlights with Cassia Obovata. www.SabaBotanical.com

Hair Color- Love the Golden Highlights of Cassia Obovata

Natural highlights of hair color like ash blonde hair, golden blonde hair or other lighter hair shades can be made radiant with Cassia Obovata. It is a green powder like henna, but unlike henna it does not deposit any color if left on for short time periods. Cassia Obovata is an excellent conditioning herb, also known to help with the hair loss. This powder can be mixed with other herbs as Amla, Shikakai for conditioning and other health benefits to hair and scalp.

According to Wikipedia, “Another Senna, Senna (Cassia obovata), often called "neutral henna", is used as a hair treatment with effects similar to henna but without the red color. The active component is an anthraquinone derivative called chrysophanic acid. It adds a slight yellow color.”

The yellow color is left when the powder made into a paste and is left on the hair for long periods of time. That why various shades of blonde hair, like ash blonde hair and golden hair gain beautiful natural highlights.

Cassia Obovata (Senna) will naturally condition all textures of hair, adding luster and supple definition. It is also known to improve scalp condition and eliminates dandruff. If you have is ash blonde hair, golden blonde or gray hair, it will brighten and add golden hues and natural highlights (depending on length of time the paste left on your hair). If you have dark hair color, it will not lighten your hair, but you will still reap the deep conditioning benefits found). It's also safe to use on relaxed, bleached or dyed hair.

Henna Plant_Cassia Senna Obovata

Left: Henna Plant.
Right: Cassia Senna Obovata Plant.

Can you SEE the difference?

Botanical History

Cassia Obovata is also called Senna (Senna Obovata). There are over 400 species of the Senna plant. The ground powder is made from harvested, dried leaves of the Cassia Obovata plant. Although it has various medicinal uses, this powder is often used to condition, thicken, define natural highlights and color the hair. Lighter hair color like ash blonde hair, golden hair and others naturally benefit from this plant.

About the Misnomer: “Neutral Henna”

Cassia Obovata or Senna is an herb that is frequently marketed by several companies as “Neutral Henna” powder. Of course this questionable marketing practice causes much confusion to the consumer.
As noted above, Cassia Obovata has a number of beneficial properties that help condition and soften the hair. However pure Cassia Obovata is not henna powder or made from the henna plant -as is the case with a genuine henna powder "neutral" mixture.

The staining and conditioning properties of Cassia Obovata or Senna (similar to henna powder staining and conditioning) might be one of the reasons it is often marketed as neutral henna.

Please Don’t Get Confused:

At Saba Botanical of USA, "neutral henna" is henna powder made from the stems of the henna plant. Genuine “neutral henna” from Saba Botanical of USA is not Cassia Obovata (Senna).

Hair Loss as We Age –What Can Be Done?

Middle-Aged-Man-Thinning-HairWanting Our Youth Back as We Age

Naturally as people age, the inclination is to use measures to retain a youthful look. Who really wants to deal with potential hair loss -or a ton of gray hair -when it's not welcome

Melanin is the pigment that gives the hair color. Since they lose melanin with age, many will use stronger permanent hair color dyes. The final hair color is produced when the hair dye interacts with the melanin. Gray hair is usually harder to dye by this measure because of the dramatically lowered melanin level.  Additionally, permanent chemical dyes can damage the hair shaft, since it becomes thinner and finer as we age.

How We Lose Our Hair as We Age

Numerous men and women are affected by hair loss conditions that are extremely difficult to prevent:

Heredity

'We are who we are' or better said: 'who made us who we are'. If a condition such as male –pattern baldness has spanned generations in our family. Guess what?

Medical Condition

There are varying underlying medical conditions that cause hair loss and it’s best to visit a dermatologist to determine if persistent hair loss could be caused by one of these conditions.

However, other countless men and women are affected by hair loss conditions that are preventable:

Natural Factors
  • Using harsh chemicals in hair dye such as para-phenylenediamene (PPD) -that can potentially cause major damage to hair and health.
  • Unhealthy diet can prevent essential nutrients from reaching the hair shaft, thus causing hair loss.
  • Physical inactivity can also contribute to our cells not producing enough oxygen, which can affect our entire body, as well as healthy hair growth.
  • Excessive stress can wreak havoc to our hair.
  • Not following a healthy hair maintenance routine.

Women exercising and happy. How We Can Keep Our Hair as We Age

  • Basically do the opposite of what is listed above under the heading, “Natural Factors”.
  • Use a plant-based hair dye. Dermatologists have recommended the use of all natural pure henna for hair to prevent potential scalp allergy and hair loss caused by the overuse of chemical hair dye. Pure henna coats the hair and doesn’t penetrate the hair shaft, like synthetic hair dye.
  • Eat a well-balanced, nutrient-rich healthy diet.
  • Move it! That’s right: Keep active and get that vital oxygen to every part of your body.
  • Avoid unnecessary stress: Learn to R-E-L-A-X.
  • Follow a healthy hair maintenance routine. Include beneficial botanical ingredients that have been proven to stop hair loss, produce good hair color and grow hair –since ancient times.
Even though aging can be a challenge, preventative measures go a long way in maintaining our hair color and avoiding hair fall. With proper application, you'll be able to look in the mirror and love, not only your hair color, but the fact that is it still healthy.

Lustrous Henna® Hair Color:  Brown

“The Pros - Natural=Gentle on the scalp. I have colored with other so called gentle coloring with disastrous results. I will now only use Saba Botanical as I had no adverse reaction at all. Also natural brown coloring. The Cons - No real cons to this product so far, just as it states if you are very grey you will have to color a couple times. I’m grey on the sides and it kind of turned it blondish which I don’t mind, it blends nicely. If you go to the gym the day after you will be able to smell the herbs, but it’s worth it for a product that’s not damaging to your body. Thanks.” – M.T., Bradenton, FL., USA
