Lustrous Henna® Natural Hair Dye -Soft Black.

Truly Natural Dye for Sensitive Scalps!! I cannot believe this product as it is truly amazing. It is 100% natural (otherwise my scalp would tell me right away) yet it covers gray hairs so well!!!

It’s even safe for pregnant women, which I am. I have suffered skin breakouts countless times due to sensitivity in my genes. Hence I was very reluctant to use this product- like most others and I was really skeptical about the coverage aspect. Usually henna leaves a reddish tinge to the hair which I do not adore. But this product has exceeded my expectations. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone.

“Compound Henna” Hair Dye is a Dangerous Mix.

The "Compound Henna" Temptation.

We’ve seen them on the shelves, with an image of a beautiful woman with long, radiant hair. We imagine that image with only, this time with ourselves in the picture with a mass of tresses, cascading down our own shoulders. At this point, we have a decision to make: grab the box and buy the “image” or, we could choose to look past the image on the box and try and find the ingredient label, of this so-called ‘natural’ henna hair dye. What we find (or don’t find) may be surprising.

This product either appears to contain no ingredients, since there is no label to be found or it contains inferior henna mixed with ‘who knows what’ There is a third choice we can make at this point, but first let’s discuss the following.

What is “Compound Henna” Hair Dye?

It may further surprise you to know that not all henna hair dye mixes are completely herbal or all-natural. “Compound henna” generally is composed of lower quality henna that contains lower dye content and is mixed with harmful additives and synthetic dyes that can cause severe allergic reaction. Even if they don’t contain PPD (para-phenylenediamine), ammonia or peroxide, they may contain harsh metallic salts, alcohol and synthetic dyes. Since the henna is mixed with synthetic dyes and ‘who knows what else’, the mixture is referred to as: “Compound Henna” hair dye.

Perhaps, you’re wondering, “How can such products sold without an ingredient label?” It does seem mysterious. However, the answer is that in the countries where the henna is grown, they might not be required to list the ingredients on the label. Once exported, the U.S. importer is not required to re-label the product.

Additionally, the FDA* states, “Because the FPLA does not apply to cosmetic samples and products used exclusively by professionals--for example, for application at a salon, or a booth at a fair or boardwalk--the requirement for an ingredient declaration does not apply to these products.”

That is why purchasing “Compound Henna” with unknown additives and synthetic dyes can be a costly and potentially dangerous experience**, even when bought at a “professional” beauty supply store.

Hair Dye -Avoid Toxic Metallic Salts!

Question: If Metallic Salts are Dangerous to Use in Dying Textiles,

Why Use them in Hair Dye?

I’ve been called a “Mixed-Media Fiber Artist” for many years now, due to my love of transforming textiles in to art. I also enjoy naturally-dyed fabrics and other fibers, still desiring to do all my own dying…one day. So with an avid interest in this subject, I was naturally drawn to the parallel between the process of fixing natural dyes to textiles and the general process of dying human hair.

Generally, in dying natural textiles the objective in selecting a mordant (a substance that sets the dye) is to try and select the least toxic one! Metallic salts are commonly used as a mordant in textile dying and a tremendous amount of caution has to be exercised. Please view the following informative video regarding setting up and recording the mordant used in the natural textile dying process. As you listen, think of how much care is used and what the instructor actually states about metallic salts. Then consider: If metallic salts are so toxic, then why would they be included in the ingredients of the majority of chemical hair dye products, as well as so-called natural “compound henna” hair dye mixes?

Metallic Salts Are a Toxic Poison.

Human hair fiber should definitely be treasured and treated with more care than the clothes on our backs. Shouldn’t caution of the highest extreme be used when selecting a hair dye to color these fibers? Certainly more care than we’d use in the natural textile dying process. Yet, take a look at drug store and beauty supply houses lined with shelves of these toxic hair dyes.

In fact, care must be exercised even when purchasing what we believe to be 'natural' henna hair dye mixes. Of course reading ingredient labels is absolutely essential. However, some countries aren’t required to even list their ingredients on the label and these products are being exported! Stay away from faulty packaging! A few years ago, I ordered premixed henna hair dye from an online store and suffered a severe allergic reaction from the metallic salts that were in the product (even though the henna compound did not contain PPD). My hair fell out in spots and my scalp broke out in horrible blisters. I had to wear a wig for months until my hair grew back and my skin cleared.

Avoid Metallic Salts in Hair Dye.

This experience set me on the search for a truly all natural henna hair dye. Even though in the past I have mixed my own ingredients to color my hair, and waited hours for the dye release to take place –I no longer have to. Quite frankly, I just don’t have the time. So, in about 90 minutes, I can use Lustrous Henna® Hair Dye. I’ve never experienced any negative reaction. My hair is actually healthier and my grays are covered.

¼ c. Lustrous Henna® Orange Peel Powder
¼ c. Lustrous Henna® Multani Mitti Clay
2 tablespoons oatmeal powder (oatmeal ground in blender)
water

Mix all powders together. Take just a couple tablespoons of this mixture and add enough water to make a paste. Apply to face and neck. Work gently in circular motion when applying paste, especially to nose and chin area. Leave on for 15 minutes, and then gently wash off with cool water. Save dry mixture in air-tight container or zip-lock bag and store until needed.

Full Body Mask

2 tablespoons Lustrous Henna® Orange Peel Powder
5 tablespoons Lustrous Henna® Face and Body Skin Treatment
2 tablespoons honey
¼- ½ cup hot water (enough to make paste)

Mix all ingredients to form a paste. Slather on (especially on back and chest areas) and leave for 15-20 minutes. Gently rinse off.

Important Note for all recipes: Please avoid contact with area around the eye. Also, do a small patch test to make sure you are not allergic to any ingredients, prior to apply mask to entire area.
